International Women’s Day grew out of the labor and suffrage movements of the early 1900s. The first U.S. National Woman’s Day was held in 1909. In 1910, activist proposed creating an international day to advocate for women’s rights, leading to the first International Women’s Day in 1911.

March 8 became the official date after Russian women went on strike in 1917 demanding “bread and peace,” helping spark the . In 1977, the officially recognized the day, helping it grow into the global celebration we mark today.

Today we celebrate the achievements of women everywhere—and recommit to the ongoing work for equality.

The 24th anniversary of the day that changed the world has arrived. Since last night, two parallel blue beams have risen to the heavens — a timeless ritual. These lights are New York’s majestic tribute to a tragedy never forgotten.
Contrary to what many believe, these beams do not rise from the exact footprints of the Twin Towers — they are set in another place, close by yet apart.
